The creation of Sri RajaRajeshwari
After the Three worlds appear, Lord Shiva’s Power awakens and from His look came the sunlight, out of which was created a Divine Goddess of the tender age of sixteen. She was beautiful and perfect in every way. She became ‘Goddess of the Spheres’, wife of Lord Shiva and became the power of knowledge and realisation. She became known as RajaRajeshwari, Mother of Mothers and Queen of Queens. She displayed three things, which show Her as Maha Shakti. These were the Shiva Lingam, the male principle of Purusha, the Yoni representing the female nature and a snake symbolic of Time, Kala. She also had a crescent moon on Her head.
She created Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva and assigned to them the duties of creation, preservation and destruction.
The Divine Seat of Sri RajaRajeshwari
The four great Powers of the Universe serve as the legs of the chair and it is upon this Seat that the Mother of Mother’s, RajaRajeshwari sits! Her rightful seat is upon Lord Shiva so He serves as Her mattress. The four legs of Her seat are Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Rudra.

Sivah svacchac-chaya-ghatita-kapata-pracchada-pata;
Tvadhiyanam bhasaam prati-phalana-rag'arunathaya

Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Rudhra, who are the gods who rule the world,become the four legs of Your cot, so that They are able to serve You always.Sadashiva who is white in colour becomes the bedspread, on which You sleep and appears red, because He reflects Your colour and to Your eyes which are the personification, of the feelings of love, He gives lot of happinessAmma has said that She has two forms. The Original form, which is the RajaRajeshwari form and the other, is the Mahamaya form.
It is Mahamaya, the Great Illusion that makes humans feel separate from God. If the world were to be seen as full of love, then the Divine Dance of Shiva/Shakti would not bring forth expansion. The concept of Mahamaya is misunderstood. Generally, people scoff and speak of Mahamaya in a degrading way but every Avatar comes with a cloak of Maya! As mentioned previously, Avatars are a dual phenomena of Divinity and Humanity. The Avatars incorporate contradictions and inconsistencies into Their Divine Play to allow humans to approach them. This precisely is the play of Mahamaya. In this way, the Divine Mother as Mahamaya forms the other face of God, Parabrahma.
In this respect it is much better to surrender to Mahamaya rather then try to overpower Her. By surrendering to Maya, She in the form of the Divine Mother will lead the devout to liberation. You may wonder how Mahamaya paves the way for liberation. Speaking in regards to the Sathya Sai Avatar, if He were to descend with all His Divine Shakti, fully potent, the human race wouldn’t have the impact to bear Him. Hence, as the Sathya Sai Avatar is on earth along with Amma, who has Her other form as Mahamaya, She allows all the people to catch a glimpse of God, Parabrahma. In this way, by surrendering to Mahamaya, She assists Her children in attain union with Lord Shiva. Verse 97 of Soundarya Lahari, describes the Divine Goddess as being Mahamaya. She confers moksha on the faithful and deserving.

Bhavani tvam daase mayi vitara drishtim sakarunam
Iti sthotum vanchan kadhayati Bhavani tvam iti yah;
Tadaiva tvam tasmai disasi nija-sayujya-padavim

RajaRajeshwari as the first created being. From Her, the rest of creation emerged. She is Parabrahma, no different then God. It is RajaRajeshwari who gave birth to countless gods, goddesses and a multitude of other divine and celestial beings. It is from Her that all the other forms of the goddesses sprung too. Amma has ten main incarnations but it is the same Divine Principle, of Goddess RajaRajeshwari, that descended as Sita, Rukhmani and other motherly forms of the goddess. It is She who resides in Lakshmi, Saraswathi, Savithri, Gayatri and all other goddesses. She also resides in the gods because as we have previously seen, the Divine Principle is not based upon gender. Without Her, Lord Shiva was simply inert consciousness. It is RajaRajeshwari, The Divine Mother who is His activating power. First She is God, then Goddess then She is the Mother.
even before he says, “Hey Bhavani”, You my Goddess, would give to him the water, falling from the crowns, of Vishnu, Rudra and Brahma, at Your feet, and grant him, the Eternal Life in Your world.
Amma declares who She really is!
Accoring to the Divine Will of Bhagavan Sti Sathya Sai Baba, Amma declared who She really is. This momenteous event took place on 29th March 1997, Her fiftieth birthday.
‘In this Kaliyuga, many people question whether God has taken Avatar or whether He will take Avatar. Sri Krishna has announced in the Bhagwad Gita that whenever dharma and sathya (right conduct and Truth) lose their very basis, when obstacles arise in their adherence, Avatars will manifest on earth. Accordingly, every now and then, Avatars appear on earth. When they manifest, they help man to recognise God in every living being’.
‘On this auspicious day, I would like to make My true form known to all. It is alright if you understand this, it is alright even if you don’t, it does not matter if you recognise Me, if does not matter even if you don’t’.
‘Today, on this auspicious day, I will Myself lift My veil of Maya and proclaim that I am the Sri Chakra, Binduvasini, Srimad Rajarajeshwari. Under the aegis of Bhagavan Sri Sri Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Srimad Rajarajeshwari too, along with all the saints, mahatmas, yogis and the body of devotees blesses, that may the entire world, may my entire creation be uplifted. With this blessing, I bind you all in both Our, that is Shiva and Shakti’s, sacred link of Love’.
With this Divine Declaration given by the Divine Mother Herself, and the announcement given by Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, through Sri Basavanna, we can see who Amma really is. Just as Bhagavan Sri Sathya Sai Baba has stated on numerous occassions, that we should not limit Him to His physical form, we should not limit how we see Amma. It is very rare to see Devi in this way. Just because She lives like a common person, do not become deluded. Being Mahamaya, She can hide Her real nature. It is not possible to grasp nor comprehend the ways of the Avatars. Amma is, without a shadow of doubt, Sai Baba’s Shakti!
Goddess History
Amma was born in Mangalore. Her paternal grandparents Sri Shama Rao and Smt Lakshmidevamma lived in Shedigudda and had dedicated their lives to serve holy people. Sri Shridhara Swamy of Varadahalli and Sri RamaDas of Ananda Ashram, Kanhangad were frequent visitors to the home of Sri Shama Rao and his wife. The couple had two children. The elder was a son named Venkataramana Rao and the younger was a daughter named Manorama. She was married to M. S. Deva Rao. Venkataramana Rao was then married to Yamuna Bai, the younger sister of M. S. Deva Rao. They lived in a house that was within the compound of the Mahamaya Temple. Lakshmidevamma, along with her daughter in law, Yamuna Bai often visited the Mahamaya Temple to offer worship to the Divine Goddess and Manorama lived adjacent to the Temple.
Venkataramana Rao and Yamuna Bai had three children. The first two were boys, Gopalakrishna Rao and Ananth Rao. The third child was Bhagwati Sri Srimad Sai RajaRajeshwari. She was born on March 29th1947 and given the name of Lalitha Rao. In the same way that Mother Eshwaramba had prayed to SathyaNarayana, Amma’s grandparents had performed a Chandika Homa.

The person who worked as a cook in the household was Tekkatte Devendra Shenoy. He too was god fearing and was a brahmachari who was engaged in Sadhana. While cooking he would sing bhajans and in the evening he would teach them to the children. He was particularly fond of Lalitha. He would decorate her hair with flowers and cook special treats for her. Shenoy would often mediate. As soon as he came out of meditation he would say to Lalitha ‘I know you are Goddess Durga Herself, you are my Divine Mother!’. Amma revealed Shenoy was a Yogi, he was indeed extremely fortunate to catch a glimpse of the Divine Mother at such a young age and recognise Her Divinity.
The Divine works in ways that cannot be understood at the worldly level of thinking. Sai Baba himself would have to awaken the Divinity latent within Lalitha hence it can be said that the transfer of Venkataramana Rao from Dharwad to Bangalore was Divinely ordained. Venkataramana Rao arrived at Bangalore and set up residence in Srirampura. Lalitha continued with her studies at Malleshwaram Girls High School and later at M. E. S. College. Through Lalitha, Sai Baba was setting an example for the whole world to follow. It was during this time that Sai Baba began to awaken Lalitha and pull back the veil of Maya that he had placed around the Divine Mother. Although people may perceive this as the normal path a sadhaka follows, we must very clearly understand that the Divine Mother is showing us humans, an example. She did not take birth to move ‘up’ the ‘spiritual ladder’. She, like Sai Baba is the final goal that is to be reached! Although Amma appears to pursue a spiritual path, she has actually made it easier for all humans to follow, she has smoothed the path.

Amma was a college student at the time of Her first darshan of Sai Baba. After watching a film, She was waiting at the Ulsoor bus stop Bangalore, along with Her brother and his wife. There was only three of them waiting for the bus, all other people had left. It was around 6.45pm. As they were waiting, Amma’s eyes fell on a car that stopped close by the bus stop due to a traffic jam. As Amma looked at the car, the black tinted rear left side window rolled down and Amma found Herself looking into the most compassionate eyes She had ever seen.The person clad in a saffron robe and had a crop of bushy black hair slowly and lovingly gazed at Her. To Amma, this person appeared to be the very embodiment of Pure Divine Love. Looking at the powerful and captivating aura around His face, She plunged into turmoil. A very strong and subtle awareness arose deep from within Her. From the inner depth of Her heart She could feel that this person was not a stranger but that She had known Him all along. She had been with Him from the beginning of time so why was She separated from Him now having spent so many lives with Him? Instantly Amma began to question Herself about the connection She had with this person. Prior to this physical darshan, Amma had a vision in which She saw this very person bringing Her down to this planet. (This is addressed later). This darshan, a fleeting glimpse was enough to begin to awaken the Devi Consciousness in Amma and this is how Amma first had physical darshan of Bhagwan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. It is without doubt that this incident was well planned by Sai Baba. The time was not yet right for the Divine Mother to be made known to the whole wide world, hence Sai Baba Himself had placed a thin veil of Maya around the Divine Mother, which would recede in accordance with Divine Time. However since Amma is another form of Sai Baba Himself, how was it possible for Her to remain hidden for so long? As Sai Baba had brought Her down to this earth, how could she just sit back and not assist Him in His Divine mission? In order for Amma to come forth and assist Sai Baba in His Divine mission, the veil of Maya needed to be removed first. As we progress on our journey we will see how Sai Baba alerted Amma and brought Her back to Her original Divine Nature.
Ugadi Discourse 2007
The following is the Ugadi discourse in which Swami stated 'this is Parvathi's year'.
During His Divine Discourse on Ugadi Day, 20thMarch 2007, Swami has spoken about Mother Parvati. Below is some of the relevant text from that Divine Discourse. It is of paramount importance that we bear in mind Amma’s 60thbirthday was just a week later and Swami Himself has stated this is Parvathi’s year. From this we can understand how Amma has stepped forth and is carrying out Her share of work that Sai Baba had kept for Her during this incarnation of Their joint Avatarship.
‘This year Sarvajit is very significant to realise the divinity latent in a human being. Goddess Parvati is responsible for this year being named as Sarvajit. She did severe penance for a number of years with an ambition to marry Lord Siva, giving up food and sleep. Lord Siva was pleased with her penance and appeared before her. He enquired, “For whose sake are you doing this penance?” She replied, “Oh! Lord! I am doing this penance to win your grace.” Lord Siva then informed her, “Your wish is fulfilled today. You can join Me now.” Before Parvati could join Lord Easwara, several divine ladies tried to dissuade her from marrying the Lord, criticising thus:
Oh! Gowri! You are very young and
Sambasiva is old;
He has matted locks and
wears a tiger skin;
He rides a bull and
is constantly on the move;
He is adorned with snakes;
How did you court Him?
Don’t you know all this?
He has no house of His own and
sleeps in the cremation ground.

They enquired, “Why do you wish to marry such an old man who goes about begging in the streets?” Parvati replied “You do not know, you are seeing only his external form. You are not making any effort to realise the Atma Tattwa in him. I am, in fact, aspiring for the divinity in him. Divinity is changeless and eternal.” Lord Easwara accepted Parvati as His consort. She was happy in every aspect. The day on which Goddess Parvati could fulfil her desire surmounting all difficulties, is celebrated as the New Year day of Sarvajit. In fact, this name to the New year was given by goddess Parvati herself!
The names of the years that follow this Sarvajit are Sarvadhari, Virodhi, Vikruthi …, Nala, Pingala, Kaalayukthi, Siddharthi, Roudri, Durmathi, Dundubhi, Rudhirodgari, Raktakshi, Krodhana and Akshaya. It is only when you pass through all these years that you can reach Akshaya. Goddess Parvati rejoined the divinity that is Akshaya (imperishable), only by great penance and after undergoing several hardship and pain. Divinity always incarnates in the year Akshaya only. This body was born in the year Akshaya during Brahmamuhurtha (the auspicious period at dawn) at 6.00 a.m. It is only when we get into the inner meaning, that we will be able to know the good and bad of any aspect.
Parvati is the goddess that supplies water to the entire world. Lord Easwara granted this boon to her. Ganga is another form of goddess Parvati. That is why the river Ganga is worshipped as Gangadevi.
Sri Shirdi Sai Nath Maharaj
Amma and the Shirdi form
Many instances show us how Amma Sai Rajarajeshwari is One in consciousness with Sathya Sai Baba, She is His Shakti, They are inseperable. Likewise, Amma is also One with the Shirdi form. Before Shirdi Baba shed His mortal coil, He gave 11 assurances to devotees. These are –
- Whoever puts his feet on Shirdi's soil, his sufferings would come to an end.
- The wretched and miserable would rise into plenty of joy and happiness, as soon they climb the steps of my Mosque.
- I shall be ever active and vigorous even after leaving this earthly body.
- My tomb shall bless and speak the needs of my devotees.
- I shall be active and vigorous even from my tomb.
- My mortal remains would speak from my tomb.
- I am ever living to help and guide all, who come to me, who surrender to me and who seek refuge in me.
- If you look at me I look at you.
- If you cast your burden on me, I shall surely bear it.
- If you seek my advice and help, it shall be given to you at once.
- There shall be no want in the house of my devotees.
As declared above, Shirdi Sai does indeed continue to speak after leaving His earthly body and His mortal remains do speak from His tomb. As He shed His mortal coil on Vijay Dashmi day (the tenth day also known as Dasara), He manifests Himself through Amma and speaks to devotees who gather at Her abode in large numbers. This rare occurance usually takes placed after Amma has distributed holy tirtham (holy water) from the Kalash (the water in the vessel that has been woshipped through out the whole ten day proceedings). She will then retire to the ‘Dwarakamayi’ room which is located on the first floor of Her abode. There is no fixed time when Shirdi Sai will manifest but Amma will immediately notify devotees when He is coming and those who closely serve Amma will know by Her actions. When Shirdi Sai Baba manifests, Amma’s tone of voice, gestures and physical features will change. Many people have seen the dramatic change in Amma’s face. Devotees then crowd around to hear His divine words of wisdom. He will bless, guide and counsel those present.

The text below is the message of Shirdi Sai Baba given to devotees at Amma’s abode on Sunday 21stOctober 2007. The words in italic are what Sai Baba actually said. One thing must be very clearly be kept in mind. Amma is ONEwith Sai Baba (Shirdi Sai and Sathya Sai). This conversation conveys her complete and utter Unitywith both forms. She should not be confused with people who are believed to go into trance where some deity of saint speaks through them. Amma is Goddess Rajarajeshwari and is unique. She cannot be compared to a devotee or anycelestial being. All gods and goddesses came forth from Her hence She is known as Mother of Mothers.

All children have gathered together in Sai Baba’s darbar. What do you think of Baba? Fakir? What do you think of yourselves? There is a large crowd of devotees but not even one of you listens to Sai Baba’s instructions!
What do you think of Mother? She is My Mother. I am alive. I will not allow the flame of the lamps to extinguish. I will definitely help Her. You have stayed with Mother but have you experienced Her motherly love? Mother stays at Mysore. The Lord alone knows Her Love. Here you are searching for Her with blindfolded eyes…what kind of children are you?
Child where are My slippers?(Baba laughs and laughs)
All think Baba has attained samadhi and does not understand anymore. I will definitely take care of Mother. Wait and watch what Sai Baba does. Humans think in a limited way. Man always projects, follows Sai Baba with selfish motives …… shamelessly. No time for service at all and enough time to beg for favours. I am old and tired. My court is open for one and all. God is present in temples and masjids. Have you even tried to find Him in your hearts? Tell Me what you want. I will grant all your wishes.
Mother is all forgiving, compassionate and full of love. Oh Shama, please come forwards! Offer Me water with a pure mind. This very day I dropped my mortal coil yet I am alive. Fakir does not need anything. All that is needed is your faith and devotion. I am here to give…….not to receive.
Lakshmi My child, Come! (Dinky comes to Ammas feet). What have you brought?(Dinky feeds pendas to Baba). Remember, you used to feed Me under the neem tree? You always wanted to accompany Me to the masjid and I used to refuse!(Baba blesses Dinky). Oh child, My feet are hurting(Dinky massages Baba’s feet). Have you lit the lamps?.......with water? (Baba asks Lakshmi to sing a bhajan so she sings. He then blesses her with a flower)
Baba: What do you want?(To lakshmi)
Lakshmi: Please always be with me
Baba: Have you brought any rotis?(Lakshmi offers roti and Baba eats)
How lovingly you have fed Me! You were always searching for Me! You are My mother and daughter as well!! Shall I come to your home? Will you look after Me?
(Baba asks for a Pandharpur bhajan to be sung and devotees sing a Vithala bhajan)
Nobody knows the immense power of Mother! Even I bow to HER! She is Vaishnavi, Kali and all pervading. With difficulty I have ensued Her presence here. There is only One Mother……..RAJARAJESHWARI! Her eyes spit fire like a volcano when angry. Do not allow Her to turn back……..for the welfare of humanity. Nobody is offering Her love…What can I do as a fakir? I did a mistake as well…..We will depart together. God is Great.
You all do worship externally, not with a pure heart. Aren’t you ashamed? You can all enter Her house as She is merciful. Had you come to My court, I would have punished. Not a single day Mother can spend peacefully. I Myself will teach you lessons from today. Without realising the Mother, all of you behave like animals.
Baba asks Mr Natraj what he wants and he replies ‘devotion’. Baba says-
What is the use of devotion to those who do not understand? I will look after all those devotees who selflessly surrender to Me.
Baba again asks Lakshmi (Dinky) Whathave you brought for the Old Man?(Dinky drapes a shawl on Baba). How much does this cost? Why have you brought such a costly thing? Baba is a fakir, does not need this. Baba then asks Lakshmi what she wants. She replies ‘Please guided everybody’. Baba says Go home now. Everyone will be waiting for you. Be on time tomorrow. I am very happy. Tell Shama I am looking for him.
Sai Baba Himself has come to the door of the Mother. There is a large crowd of devotees here and no place to sit. All have fickle minds and cannot discriminate between right and wrong. Neither can you listen with attention nor contemplate properly. Do not try to test God………I will test you. You all want salvation but are you ready to give up your worldly attachments? God is formless, without qualities. I am formless and beyond qualities and have come for evolving humans. I am all pervading and all knowing.
This is the Kali Yuga……..age of demonic qualities. That is why Mother has accompanied Me.Wait and watch for all the miracles that will take place in the future. It is your imagination that Baba is old. I am ever young. I move to all places from Shirdi. At the behest of Mother, I have come to HER court. Sing Her glory (all sing a Devi bhajan – Jai Durge)
Love to all children who have assembled here in Mothers court. I promise to come here next year again. Do not worry about Mother…..I will. She is Truth. She is simple. She is childlike.
